Aim at Heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither. – C.S. Lewis
When you look for meaning in your life
, aim at Heaven. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate this philosophy if you think of Heaven as that ideal state of being that exists beyond earthly rewards.
All things physical are nurtured by the earth, the air, water, even fire. Everything that has “life” on this earth came from the earth and survives thanks to earthly things upon which to find food, shelter, and subsistence. Yet, earthly life, the biological mechanics of being alive, are not enough for humans.
Humans are set apart thanks to one main difference–consciousness. For us, the universe is here, but without human consciousness, it could not be conceived. For us, self-awareness goes beyond instinctual drives of eat, sleep, fight, and mate. For humans, it is not enough to merely exist. There is a spiritual need for meaning to our existence.
Can you find meaning in life
, meaning in your life, from earthly things alone? If you aim for meaning in your life by striving only for earthly desires, earthly rewards, earthly comforts, does that yearning you feel get fulfilled? Or does the yearning just grow bigger, while your spiritual life grows emptier?
When you seek to find the right direction in your life, where do you aim?
