“In matters of style, swim with the current. In matters of principle, stand like a rock.” – Thomas Jefferson
One thing not many people realize about Thomas Jefferson is that he used fashion to put people at ease, part of what earned him the nickname, “Man of the People.” He took a very casual tone in his attire and encouraged a far less formal atmosphere at the White House.
On the other hand, he was a world traveler and sure to dress appropriately to ingratiate himself with the more fanciful French and English courts as he “handled” foreign leaders in the early days of our country’s independence.
Thomas Jefferson understood the need to find common ground with people if you hope to communicate with them effectively. When you want to connect with someone
, to really get them to understand you, what do you do to put them at ease first?
